Divide and Concur:
Positive strategies for passing down personal possessions

Talking about what will happen to your belongings when you no longer need them is not a conversation most people look forward to. But it can be a great opportunity to share stories and have discussions that will minimize conflict between your heirs. Our interactive presentation, Divide and Concur: Positive Strategies for Handing Down your Personal Possessions, gives attendees tools to get this important conversation started.

Divide and Concur is based on the educator’s guide for the University of Minnesota Extension Service workbook Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate? The presentation focuses on the six key factors to consider when transferring non-titled assets:
  • Understanding the sensitivity of the issue of transferring non-titled assets
  • Determining what you want to accomplish in this transfer
  • Deciding what is “fair” in the context of your family
  • Understanding that belongings have different meanings for different individuals
  • Considering distribution options and consequences
  • Agreeing to manage conflicts as they arise

The presentation runs between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on audience participation, which is encouraged. Content is relevant to elders thinking about their own belongings and to adult children looking for ways to assist a parent who may be making a transition.

There is no cost for this program. At NextStage Associates, we know how difficult this process can be. Our goal is to show families this doesn't have to be a conversation to dread, and that it can have very beneficial results. Please note, since this program is presented as a community service, we do not attempt to sell my services, though we do explain our qualifications to speak on the subject.
